Tides of Teneriffe

Following on from the very successful Reflections on New Farm, New Farm and Districts Historical is about to release their new publication Tides of Teneriffe. Her Excellency Governor Penelope Wensley AO will launch the book at the monthly meeting of the New Farm and Districts Historical Society on Saturday November 28 commencing 2pm at the Merthyr Road Uniting Church Complex, 52 Merthyr Road New Farm.

Author Vicki Bridgstock steers readers through the flow of Teneriffe’s history and local memories, from hunting for tortoises with the Turrbal people to living in one of our choice inner city locations, all interspersed with historic images and never before published family photos of life in Teneriffe.

Let the voices of Teneriffe people tell their stories to you – hear about Street Corner Jimmy, the US Navy parrot, how people responded when a wool store exploded in flames metres from their backyards, which iconic Australian film used Teneriffe House as its location, and how local people recently fought to bring back their suburb.

The tides of Brisbane's history have ebbed and flowed along the riverbanks and wharves of Teneriffe from before the suburb’s founding as a bucolic colonial outpost; to when its wool and sugar wharves were the centre of Queensland’s economic boom times; to its days of decline marked depression and war, fire and flood; to eventual revival as one of the best places to live in Brisbane.

Follow the Tides of Teneriffe to hear the hidden voices and stories of Brisbane's heartland.
